This iRobot Roomba s9+ is the second model from the brand to catapult to the top on our category tests of robot vacuums. Most importantly, it excelled in our hard floor cleaning tests, managing to pick up 99% of the dry oats, sand, baking soda, nuts and screws that we spread out; earning it a spot in our list of the best vacuums for hardwood floors. 

On carpets the pickup rate was less than 99% which was only in our carpet tests and the overall average pickup of all the vacuum cleaners was only 73% on carpet. Since it cleans in a random pattern, we found out that it took longer to clean up a straight line of debris than in other models that we used for the test.

Like most robot vacuums, it did not clean up to the charging dock, but it did a better job than any other robot we tested and its spot cleaning feature did a more efficient job as well. This one boosts power when it feels carpet and it features a cycle that gives a second pass for better cleaning.

Roomba s9+ has other features that ease its maintenance, for instance, self-emptying dirt disposal which occurs when the robot seals dirt in the bag-lined dustbin of the charging base for convenience. The self-cleaning roller brushes needed very little maintenance — they didn’t get tangled with pet hair like the models with bristle brushes did in our test, thus perfect for households with shedding animals. A very effective filter will stop bothersome allergens but the filter is not washable.

When it comes to cleaning your home, then you don’t necessarily have to spend so much of your money just to make your home a clean one. The ILife V3s robot vacuum cleaner is the most inexpensive of all the models under test, and it left us stunned as to how it could clean more effectively than some of the more costly robot vacuums available in the market.

It doesn’t have apps to assist on scheduling and operating the robotic vacuum; but, it has impressive object and furniture detection and avoidance as well as high performance at picking dirt. On Rug and carpeting, it went round many times to ensure all hair, dirt and sand were picked up and in addition, it was able to pick up debris which seemed to be stuck in the carpet fibers.

This was somewhat surprising because the robot vacuum doesn’t have a brush roll to assist it in collecting guts and hair. Shark AI’s compact size and sleek build are quite remarkable for a robotic vacuum cleaner that has a self-emptying bin. It was very convenient for use after charging since one only needed to press a button for it to start.

It was able to slide under the toe kicks of a kitchen cabinet and maneuver in tight areas without getting ansi or stuck; however, the LIDAR sensor that is located at the top of the robot makes it too tall to pass under most furniture. After providing thorough coverage to the test floors, the Shark went back into the dock and vacuumed each particle it collected.

The Roborock Q Revo cleans and mops your floors at the same time, and the circular brush pads rotate at the speed of 200 per minute. Notably, those who use carpets with heights of up to 7 mm. don’t need to remove the mopping pads before vacuuming. 

What is interesting is that a part of this robot scans carpeted areas, and it lifts the pads to prevent them from getting damp. The pads also don’t require replacement after every use, a feature that saves a lot of time. The robot washes and dries them when it goes back to its charging position.

The Q Revo features a rubber brush instead of a bristles one which also contributes to the reduction of pet hair tangling. The only challenge that we experienced was that some of the fur became stuck to the corners of the brush but in small quantities that could not stop the brush from doing its work. Also, the brush roll can effortlessly be removed for further cleaning and maintenance tasks to be carried out. Moreover, the brush is able to adjust and float towards uneven end surfaces!

This vacuum performed extremely well during our hard floor cleaning tests, because it was able to pick up almost all of the debris that we put on the floor. As with other models we have tried, it was not as effective in cleaning carpeted surfaces. 

Though it cleaned the carpet’s surface well, it missed some of the irregular particles such as sand on the carpet. To charge the machine, there was a charging dock which had the ability to dispense the contents of the dustbin into a big bag. The dustbin also has a HEPA filter and we found it convenient to remove for washing or replacement as needed.

Through the app, you are able to set the time for auto-clean of various rooms in your house, set the no-go zones for the robot, and monitor the actual path traversed by the robot as it cleans. Also, if a particular room in your home requires more attention, you can easily change cleaning intensity using the app.

The Dreametech L10s Ultra performed well when in our testing maneuvers; it would not crash into furniture or other obstacles and was able to clean under objects with low height such as sofas. The long runtime, large dust collection and ability to vacuum effectively make this model ideal for larger homes.

The L10s Ultra is a dual-function cleaning machine that is both a vacuum cleaner and a mop. When cleaning on carpet most of its mopping pads lifts up thereby the dry and wet cleaning are done without having to be done at different intervals. During the testing phase, we identified that it performed a great job in the aspect of cleaning the pet hair from the carpet. Not even a single particle remained tangled at the brush roll or wedged at the dust bin – all dropped neatly into the dock’s 3-litre dust bag.

On transferring from the hard floor to carpet, the mopping pads rose up very fast. This we appreciate because there is a separate compartment for the cleaning solution within the dock and it does not need to be mixed with the water in the water tank. While mopping we realized that the sticky stains got lighter with just one swipe of the mop. The dock also cleans and dries the mopping pads when the robot goes back to it or after completing a cleaning cycle.

When we analyzed this robot to 10 similar robots it obtained the second highest total maneuverability. The performance of this robot vacuum was outstanding in terms of its ability to move around with objects in front of it and also its effectiveness in picking up dirt on floors under furniture, around points of convergence, and around corners.

Regarding usability, the app was reported as being highly usable by its users. It enables the user to control the water and suction of the device as well as set cleaning routines and observe a live stream from the robot. Even though it is one of the most costly robots on the market today we believe that the capability and versatile features that it offers are justified.

Caring for a pet and maintaining clean surroundings at the same time can be quite conflicting. However, although your robot vacuum may not be able to take your dog for a walk or clean up the mess that your pet leaves around the house, it will be useful in preventing dirt and pet hair accumulation on your floor.

The iRobot Roomba J7 performed excellent in this category in picking up pet hair and dirt without the brush roll getting tangled. This is because instead of bristles on the bottom, the brush is equipped with rubber which helps to collect hair and junk without the hairs becoming entangled.

There was one feature that really impressed us and that was the fact that the rubber brush of the vacuum could be disentangled and cleaned more easily when compared to most other vacuums we have used before. The powerful suction enables the vacuum to collect both crumbs and sand with similar efficiency on a hard floor and carpet floor.

When it came to flooring surfaces, it excelled by receiving perfect scores, we also found that it was equally flexible in handling small objects such as socks on the floor.

If you own a Roomba, the device may suggest a specific schedule during shedding season; it also learns your cleaning habits and may suggest additional cleaning during the shedding season it has gathered from you. This is helpful to maintain cleanliness of your home since its able to remove dust, allergens and excess pet hair easily.

Something to note is that this robot vacuum has a warranty from the manufacturer against pet waste, but it directly drove over the simulated pet waste during testing. This might have to do with the conditions of the test, however, we would not advise to use this vacuum in an area where it could come into contact with feces from pets.

This vacuum cleaner worked so well at home that I am interested in getting another model for the upper floor. However, it is especially great that the app notifies when it is time to clean or replace some component of the vacuum. The house is much cleaner than it used to be and we often recommend this service to our relatives and acquaintances.

Should you consider the ability to vacuum without supervision and a set of adjustable characteristics important for you, the Roborock S8+ will perfectly fit. While testing for this review, we determined that the high-tech features combined with the ease of using this vacuum were worth the price.

On both hardwood floor and tile floor, hair, dirt, and large particles such as cereal and granules where easily picked up by the Roborock. Hair did not get entangled in the brush roll and any those that pieces of hair that got entangled could be removed by hand.

The mapping especially was pleasing to the eye in our opinion. It only took much less time as planned in setting up and aimed at having an accurate map that we could easily designate and label. To a technical user this was quite manageable but we found that there were some gaps in the instructions and we would have loved a link to a how to type video or something similar.

Setting up cleanings is simple, and changes to the cleaning times can be made as simple as modifying the schedule even if you alter the time right before the vacuum is set to start. It has a self-emptying option, which is always good to witness, although this mode is very noisy and noisy; we had to disable automatic self-emptying because it was too noisy.

We don’t believe it could replace the wet-vacuum cleaning every month but it has been designed for regular cleaning. We could not evaluate it on carpet; however, the manufacturer suggests that it is suitable for this surface type.

Overall, we appreciated how smart this vacuum cleaner was – the smart settings were actually useful and enhanced the ability of the machine to navigate around (it glided over human and chair legs). The robot vacuum also adapted as time went by since it had started learning the patterns in the layout of the apartment.

Disadvantages are few here, but we do feel that for the price, it should be thrown in a couple more mop pads or even a few accessories.

What to look for when selecting for the best robot vacuum

Here is the best approach to selecting the most suitable robot vacuum for your home.

✔️ Space: How big of a home do you own? If your robot vacuum is going to be used in a large room or multiple rooms, then you need to make sure that it has a longer battery life and a larger dust bin. For large areas you also get models that recharge then continue cleaning where they left off which is quite beneficial. Remember that if your robot vacuum requires recharging, the time that it takes to finish cleaning your house will significantly be affected.

✔️ Features: Some of the features that are available in current robot vacuums are now really quite impressive.  A feature that we believe is highly useful in any home is the mapping function to help the robot navigate through your home other than ramming through your furniture as most models do. 

Some others we consider to be very useful are automatic carpet recognition, no-go zone established by using the application, recharge-and-resume facility. However, not all of these will be required by everybody, and this is the reason why when choosing a robot for your home, you have to determine which you consider to be essential.

✔️ Mapping Capabilities: A robot with mapping abilities such as LIDAR or 3D obstacles detection will remember the layout of your house and exactly where it has and has not been cleaned making it easier for it to be more efficient. If a robot doesn’t map, it will just move around the objects in your home as it cleans and it may fail to clean some spots or even some rooms all together. You won’t get the opportunity to preview the cleaning pattern of the robot, direct the robot to clean a particular room or an area, or create no-entry zones.

✔️ No-Go Zones: Almost all robot vacuum apps let you define no-go zones that exclude an entire room or a part of it. I think no-go zone zones in the app would be significant to homes that have lots of areas to avoid such as the kid’s playpen or the dog beds and their bowls. For those who do not like to rely on an app to manage their device, some of the devices have strips that you can put on the floor and these guide your robot vacuum not to clean areas that you do not want it to clean.

Some cheaper vacuum models achieve this by including boundary strips which are placed on the floor to confine the robot to a particular area. Some of the cheaper models contain fall-detection features that prevent them from falling over down the stairs.

Some vacuums have compatibility with apps which help in recording and planning your cleaning time and many of them are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant and other voice assistants. All robot vacuums will self charge back to their charging docking stations and some models can even pause a clean session, charge then resume cleaning from the same spot. 

If you have a pet, try to find a vacuum cleaner that has a rubber brush roller. We realized that the pet hair did not cling to the soft bristle as much as it did with the hard bristle brush and the hair that stuck to it could be wiped off more easily.

Just before the robot sets to cleaning, ensure loose items you do not wish to be vacuumed, are picked up, remember to check under the sofa, and ensure that cables, clothes, rug edges and window blind cords are concealed. 

If you did not use a wet-mop vacuum, wipe up all liquids on the floor. In between cleaning, it is advisable to remove the dust bin and clean the sensors and charging contacts with a clean cloth so as to help the robot move around with good precision and to connect to the charger properly.

What is the way to clean a robot vacuum

In general, Robot vacuums should not need much scrutiny, but every robot has its care and maintenance recommendations for that particular model. Here are some tips that you can so as to maintain your robotic vacuum cleaner; check whether brushes of the robot have entangled any hair and remove it, – empty (and rinse if the manufacturer advises you) the dust bin periodically after each cleaning session and, wiped the sensors if such exist, and cleaning the sensors or cameras to ensure that your robot can see your home well for the next cleaning session.

It is also advised to occasionally clean the filter of the robot if your manufacturer permits and the filter must be dried before it is re-inserted again. Change it when you find your robot cleaner suction has declined or use it as recommended by the manufacturer.
